From Sanskrit सरीसृप (sarīsṛpa, crawling, creeping; creeping animal; snake); perhaps via Old Khmer sarisṛp (crawling or creeping thing: worm, snake, reptile). Cognate with Modern Khmer សរីស្រឹប (sɑɑriihrɨp). Compare Pali siriṅsapa.
