English[edit]

Suffix[edit]

-ïng

  1. (rare, chiefly Netherlands) Alternative spelling of -ing (after a vowel that would form a digraph)
    beïng, doïng, goïng
  2. (rare, chiefly Netherlands, nonstandard) Alternative spelling of -ing (after any vowel)
    skiïng, tryïng

Usage notes[edit]

  • Use of the diaeresis where the the last vowel of the suffixed verb does not regularly form a digraph with a succedent ⟨i⟩ may be considered incorrect, as the diaeresis then has no effect on the pronunciation regularly implied by English orthography.
