Etymology 1

From (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Indo-European *-(e)ro-. Compare երկ-ար (erk-ar) from Proto-Indo-European *dweh₂-ro- (“long”). See also -իր (-ir), -որ (-or), -ուր (-ur).

Suffix

-ար • (-ar)

2. Found in several words. The function is not very clear.

   զարդ ― zard ― ornament, embellishment

   զարդարեմ ― zardarem ― to adorn

   մեծ ― mec ― great

   մեծարեմ ― mecarem ― to honor, to venerate

   արդ ― ard ― shape

   արդար ― ardar ― just

   մութ ― mutʻ ― dark

   մթար ― mtʻar ― black, smutty

From the root of հարկանեմ (harkanem), with the loss of հ- (h-). Compare the pair փողահար (pʻołahar) - փողար (pʻołar).
