Punjabi
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Borrowed from Classical Persian ـدار (-dār). Compare Hindi -दार (-dār).
Suffix
[edit]-ਦਾਰ • (-dār)
Usage notes
[edit]Added to nouns to form both adjectives and nouns. Masculine nouns of the extended declensional subtype (that is, those ending in -ਆ -ā) usually take an oblique case ending before the suffix. For instance:
- ਰਿਸ਼ਤਾ (riśtā, “relation”) → ਰਿਸ਼ਤੇਦਾਰ (riśtedār, “relative”).
- ਪੱਤਾ (pattā, “leaf”) → ਪੱਤੇਦਾਰ (pattedār, “leafy”).
