Etymology

From Ancient Greek -γενής (-genḗs, producer of). Possibly influenced by Irish gin ((to give) birth, source) from Old Irish gainithir, from Proto-Celtic *ganyetor. Both ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *ǵenh₁-.
