From Proto-Slavic *gordъ, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *gardas, from Proto-Indo-European *gʰordʰos, from base (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Indo-European *gʰerdʰ- (“to enclose, to grasp”), either directly or possibly via (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Germanic *gardaz. Cognate with Dutch gaard, gaarde. Doublet of град (grad), a borrowing from Old Church Slavonic.
