Saterland Frisian
Etymology
From Old Frisian hlakia, hlakkia, from Proto-West Germanic *hlakōn, *hlakkōn, from Proto-Germanic *hlakkōną (“to laugh”).
Cognate with West Frisian laitsje (“to laugh”), Old English hlacerung (“scoffing, mockery, scorn”), Icelandic hlakka (“to scream, screech”).
Alteration of k/kk to ch likely due to influence from Middle Low German/German Low German lachen and/or German lachen (“to laugh”).
