Saterland Frisian

Etymology

From Old Frisian hlakia, hlakkia, from Proto-West Germanic *hlakōn, *hlakkōn, from Proto-Germanic *hlakkōną (to laugh).

Cognate with West Frisian laitsje (to laugh), Old English hlacerung (scoffing, mockery, scorn), Icelandic hlakka (to scream, screech).

Alteration of k/kk to ch likely due to influence from Middle Low German/German Low German lachen and/or German lachen (to laugh).
