From Proto-Slavic *-teľь. Cognate to Old Church Slavonic -тєль (-telĭ), Serbo-Croatian -telj and Russian -тель (-telʹ).

Suffix

  1. Suffix appended to words to create an agent noun, indicating a person who does something, much like the English -or.
    učit + ‎-tel → ‎učitel
    stavět + ‎-tel → ‎stavitel
