Probably from a Vulgar Latin *basto, bastonis, itself a modification of Late Latin bastum, or possibly noun use of the verb *bastāre, from Lua error in Module:parameters at line 360: Parameter "sc" should be a valid script code; the value "polytonic" is not valid. See WT:LOS..
