Etymology

From Proto-Celtic *blēdanī, possibly from Proto-Indo-European *bʰloyd- (pale), though the semantic connection is weak.[1] See also Lithuanian blaĩvas (whitish, blue, sober), Proto-West Germanic *blait, Albanian blehurë.

Celtic cognates include Welsh blwydd, blwyddyn, Old Breton blened, Cornish bloth, Old Irish blíadain.
