From Proto-Germanic *ganesaną, equivalent to ġe- +‎ nesan. Cognate with Old Saxon ginesan, Old High German ginesan (German genesen), Gothic 𐌲𐌰𐌽𐌹𐍃𐌰𐌽 (ganisan).
