Etymology

Two possibilities:

• locative case of Proto-Indo-European *h₂ewsḗr, whence ᾱ̓ήρ (āḗr, “mist, air”) and cognate with ἠώς (ēṓs, “dawn”), from Proto-Indo-European *h₂ews- (“dawn; east”)
• from Proto-Indo-European *h₂éyeri (“early”)

Compare ἠέριος (ēérios, “with the early morning”).
