Etymology

From Middle English atenen, ateonen, from Old English *ātēonian, *ātȳnan, *ātīenan, from a- + tēonian (to injure, irritate, slander), and tȳnan, tīenan (to irritate, vex, trouble, insult, revile), equivalent to a- +‎ teen.
