From Proto-Iranian *dāráyati, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *dʰāráyati, from Proto-Indo-European *dʰoréyeti (to hold). Cognates include Sanskrit धारयति (dhārayati), Latin firmus and Lithuanian derė́ti.
