Vietnamese
Etymology
From Proto-Vietic *maːɲʔ (“to borrow”), cognate with Muong mãnh, Arem maːɲʔ. Compare Nghệ An/Hà Tĩnh dialects mạn (“to borrow”) and mướn (“to hire, to rent”).
Compare also Proto-Katuic *maaɲ (whence Pacoh manh (“to borrow”)). The words for "to ask, to request" in other Austroasiatic languages (such as Semnam smaɲ, Khmu [Cuang] maːɲ, Mon သၟာန်) might be related as well.
