Etymology

Probably from Rockaway Beach, where they were used. From the Unami lekawe (“sandy place”) or a Munsee cognate of that word.

rockaway (plural rockaways)

1. (dated, uncommon) A light, low, four-wheeled carriage with standing top, open at the sides, but with waterproof curtains for bad weather.
2. (dated, uncommon) A similar but heavier carriage, enclosed except at the front, and with a door at each side.
