From Proto-Tai *saːm (three), from Middle Chinese (MC sam, “three”). Cognate with Thai สาม (sǎam), Northern Thai ᩈᩣ᩠ᨾ, Lao ສາມ (sām), ᦉᦱᧄ (ṡaam), Tai Dam ꪎꪱꪣ, Tai Nüa ᥔᥣᥛᥴ (sáam), Ahom 𑜏𑜪 (saṃ), Bouyei saaml, Zhuang sam.
