menzogna
Italian
Etymology
From a Vulgar Latin *mentionia, probably from a crossing of Latin mentiō, mentiōnem with mentīri, or derived from a Late Latin mentio (“lie”), itself probably from a hypothetical *mentītiō from mentītus, past participle of mentior. Compare Old French mensoigne, Romansch manzögna, and Sicilian minzogna from the same source. Compare also French mensonge, Occitan messorga, messonja, and Romanian minciună from different but related roots.
