Inherited from Sanskrit লৱণ্ড (lavaṇḍa, servant, boy). Cognate with Maithili 𑒪𑒾𑒿𑒩𑒲 (laũrī, maidservant), Awadhi लौँड़िया (la͠uṛiyā, daughter), Hindi लौंडा (lauṇḍā), Kumaoni लौँरो, Marathi लवँडी (lavĕṇḍī, female slave).
