From a Vulgar Latin root *aiūnāre, from adiūnāre, from Late Latin ieiūnāre, present active infinitive of ieiūnō, from Latin ieiūnus. Compare Aromanian agiun, agiunari, Spanish ayunar, French jeûner, also Italian digiunare. Cf. Albanian agjëroj, agjinoj.
