From Proto-Balto-Slavic *pírmas, from Proto-Indo-European *pró (“leading to”), ultimately from *per- (“before”). Cognate with Old English fyrest (English first); Latin primus, Ancient Greek πρῶτος (prôtos) (Modern Greek πρώτος (prótos)).
