From Old Catalan aucell, from Late Latin aucellus, syncopated from Vulgar Latin *avicellus, diminutive of Latin avis, from Proto-Italic *awis, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂éwis. Cognate with Occitan aucèl, French oiseau.
