From Old Provençal [Term?], from Late Latin aucellus, contracted form of Vulgar Latin *avicellus, diminutive of Latin avis, from Proto-Italic *awis, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂éwis. Cognate with Occitan aucèl, French oiseau, Italian uccello, Friulian uciel, Sicilian aceddu.
