Etymology

From Middle Persian stpl (stabr, strong, firm). Akin to Sanskrit स्तम्भ (stambha, pillar) (and स्तभ्नाति (stabhnāti, he supports)), Old Norse stafr (staff), Old Church Slavonic стоборъ (stoborŭ, column) and Ancient Greek ἀστεμφής (astemphḗs, unshaken).
