From Middle French frimas, from Old French frimas, an extended form of Old French frime (“hoarfrost”), from Proto-West Germanic *hrīm (“hoarfrost”), from Proto-Germanic *hrīmô (“hoarfrost”), related to Old English hrīm (“hoarfrost”). More at rime.
