Inherited from Middle French frimas, from Old French frimas, an extended form of Old French frime (hoarfrost), from Proto-West Germanic *hrīm (hoarfrost), from Proto-Germanic *hrīmô (hoarfrost), related to Old English hrīm (hoarfrost). More at rime.
