Etymology

In part onomatopoeic, but cannot be separated from Old French claquer (clap, clack, clatter), which is ultimately from Proto-Germanic *klakōną (to clap, chirp), from Proto-Indo-European *glag- (to make a noise, clatter, chirp).[1]
