Borrowed from Swedish president, from Old French president, from Latin praesidēns (literally “sitting in front”), prae- + sedeō (“sit”) from Proto-Italic *sedēō, from Proto-Indo-European *sed-; whence distantly cognate to satula from Lua error in Module:parameters at line 360: Parameter 1 should be a valid language, etymology language or family code; the value "fiu-fin-pro" is not valid. See WT:LOL, WT:LOL/E and WT:LOF., English saddle, borrowed via Proto-Germanic *sadulaz; also compare Proto-Slavic *sěděti hence Russian сиде́ть (sidétʹ); to be distinguished from more immediate learned relatives like German Präsident, Italian presidente, Russian президе́нт (prezidént), French président, English president.
