Etymology

Cognate with Cebuano dalugdog (thunder). The current meaning comes from the ancient Tagalog belief that thunder can be heard throughout the world, hence the term sandaigdigan, now shortened as daigdig, to refer to the entire world as a single area that the sound of thunder can reach.
