From Vulgar Latin scūriolus, a diminutive of scūrius, metathesized variant of Latin sciūrus, ultimately from Ancient Greek σκίουρος (skíouros). Compare Occitan esquirou, Aragonese escrihuelo and esquiruelo, and Italian scoiattolo.
