Etymology

Traditionally explained as a bahuvrihi compound of σκιά (skiá, “shade, shadow”) + οὐρά (ourá, “tail”), thus "(one who) generates shade with its tail", but this could be a folk etymology, and it might actually be Pre-Greek, if the -ουρος (-ouros) is a suffix rather than a standalone word.
