Inherited from Old East Slavic лось (losĭ), from Proto-Slavic *ȏlsь, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *alśis, from Proto-Indo-European *h₁ólḱis, from *h₁el-.[1] Cognate with Russian лось (losʹ), Old Polish łoś.
