Uncertain. Different origins are proposed, including:

  • Old Tupi paranãbuku ("long river") or para’nã ("river") + buka ("hole").
  • Pernão Boca or Pernambuka, approximations of how natives referred to "Boca de Fernão", an old name for the Santa Cruz channel.
