- A hard, reddish wood of a tree of the tribe Caesalpinieae, often used as dyewood; especially Paubrasilia echinata, used to make violin bows.

Uncertain. Different origins are proposed, including:
- Old Tupi paranãbuku ("long river") or para’nã ("river") + buka ("hole").
- Pernão Boca or Pernambuka, approximations of how natives referred to "Boca de Fernão", an old name for the Santa Cruz channel.
