Etymology

Recent loan from Basque [Term?], though Basque's term for such a cap is txapel (from Latin). Possibly a Basque pronunciation of Vulgar Latin *abonnis, of Germanic origin, from Frankish *obbunni, from *ob- (above, over) + *bunni, from Proto-Germanic *bi + *bundiją (bundle), from Proto-Indo-European *bʰendʰ- (to tie). Compare the etymology of bonete.
