From Old Galician-Old Galician-Portuguese quaraesma, from Latin quadrāgēsima (the fortieth part; Lent), substantive of quadrāgēsimus (fortieth). Cognate of quadragésima (fortieth). Compare Spanish Cuaresma. Doublet of quadragésima, which was a borrowing.
