The names of the river among the languages of the region usually translate to "black river", such as Mongolian Хар мөрөн (Xar mörön), Manchu ᠰᠠᡥᠠᠯᡳᠶᠠᠨ
ᡠᠯᠠ (sahaliyan ula) or Chinese 黑龍江/黑龙江 (Hēilóngjiāng, literally “black dragon river”).
