From Ancient Greek Ἀπολλύων (Apollúōn, Apollyon, the destroyer), from ἀπόλλυμι (apóllumi, utterly destroy) via phono-semantic matching with Biblical Hebrew אֲבַדּוֹן (ʾaḇaddôn, destruction, ruin).
