Etymology

[edit]

Gikun word derived by applying Chinese-derived spelling 安息 (rest), a term which decomposes into (contentment) + (cease, rest), to native Japanese word やすみ (yasumi, rest).

Noun

[edit]

安息 (やすみ)[1] (yasumi) →  (やす) (yasumi), 安息 (あんそく)(ansoku)

  1. rest (ceasing work being content with work completed)
※ God "rested" only in the sense that He was content () and pleased with what he had made (Genesis 1:31) and ceased () creating (Genesis 2:2). This sense is shown clearly by this gikun word.
