From Proto-Indo-European *(s)ptēiw-, *(s)ptyēw- ‎(to spit, vomit). Cognate with Latin spuō ‎(spit, verb), Ancient Greek πτύω ‎(ptúō, spit, vomit), Old Armenian թուք ‎(tʿukʿ), Old Church Slavonic пльвати ‎(plĭvati), Sanskrit ष्ठीवति ‎(ṣṭhīvati).
