From Proto-Indo-European *(s)ptyēw- ‎(to spit, vomit); cognate with Ancient Greek πτύω ‎(ptúō, spit out), Latin spuō, Proto-Germanic *spīwaną (whence English spew), Albanian shpif, Russian плевать ‎(plevátʹ), Persian تف ‎(tuf), Sanskrit ष्ठीवति ‎(ṣṭhīvati).
