From Proto-Slavic *plьvati, from Proto-Indo-European *(s)ptyēw-(to spit, vomit). Cognate with Bulgarian плюя(pljuja), Serbo-Croatian пљу̏вати/pljȕvati, Slovene pljuvati, Slovak pľuť. Non-Slavic cognates include Ancient Greek πτύω(ptúō), Gothic 𐍃𐍀𐌴𐌹𐍅𐌰𐌽(speiwan), Sanskrit ष्ठीवति(ṣṭhīvati, to spit), Latin spuō, Old Armenian թուք(tʿukʿ).
