From Proto-Balto-Slavic *neśtei (to carry), from Proto-Indo-European *h₁neḱ (Derksen) or *neḱ- / *eneḱ- (to reach, arrive, carry) (ЭССЯ).

Baltic cognates include Lithuanian nèšti (to carry), Latvian nest (to carry).
