From Proto-Balto-Slavic *nestei ‎(to carry) (author?) or *neś- (Derksen), from Proto-Indo-European *h₁neḱ (Derksen) or *neḱ- / *eneḱ- ‎(to reach, arrive, carry) (ЭССЯ).

Baltic cognates include Lithuanian nèšti ‎(to carry), Latvian nest ‎(to carry).
