Etymology[edit]

First attested as de Arsnan around 1100. Etymology unknown. Relationships have been proposed to Latin arx (arch), arsus (land cleared by slash-and-burn agriculture), Dutch aars (arse, rear) and Old English ærsc- (agricultural land, game park).
