Etymology[edit]

First attested as asmedelf in the first half of the 11th century. Compound of Old Dutch askman (Norman) and delf (dug or canalised watercourse). According to an alternative reading, the first element is Old Frisian *Askman (a personal name) or *Askema (a surname) or Askmanna.
