[edit]First attested as aeltsbuur in the 15th century. Potentially a compound of Old Frisian Alder (a personal name) and buur (“house, cottage”). The Dutch toponym is derived from an older Frisian name for the settlement: its current (official) Frisian name is Lytsewâld.
