Portuguese

Etymology

There is in Medieval Latin the form Alavarius, but it is discarded by some (as if made up to account for some long initial A), who prefer Latin Averius, from Celtic *adberos (estuary) (whence Proto-Brythonic *aber). Cognate with Aveiras.
