Etymology

Seemingly a back-formation from Aziatisch., which has been attested since the sixteenth century. Probably ultimately from Latin āsiāticus. Confer German Asiate, Swedish asiat and similar terms in other North Germanic languages. This etymology is incomplete. You can help Wiktionary by elaborating on the origins of this term.
