Etymology[edit]

Compound of Czech Baťa (a surname) and dorp (village). Named after Czech industrialist Tomáš Baťa (1876-1932), who founded a shoe factory near Best in 1894. Similar names are Agodorp, Heveadorp and Philipsdorp. See also Bataguassu, Batatuba, Batayporã, Batawa, বাটানগর (baṭangor) and باٹاپور (Batapur).
