Biest is first attested as byest in 1488. Houtakker is first attested as houtacker in 1428. Biest derives from bies (rush, Scirpus sp.) suffixed with the collectivising suffix -t. Houtakker derives from a compound of hout (rising deciduous forest) and akker (farmland).
