Etymology[edit]

From Bijlmer (a former village) +‎ meer (lake). The toponym Bijlmer derives from a contraction of Old Dutch bindel (connection, link) and mere (lake). The meaning of the toponym was gradually forgotten, and the element meer was appended as a result.
