Dutch[edit]
Etymology[edit]
From Bijlmer (“a former village”) + meer (“lake”). The toponym Bijlmer derives from a contraction of Old Dutch bindel (“connection, link”) and mere (“lake”). The meaning of the toponym was gradually forgotten, and the element meer was appended as a result.
